in the industry-leading professional organizations
and take the time to earn professional credentials.
3.

written over 2,600 resumes and cover
letters since 2000. Why do we specify "since
2000"? Simple- resume writing has changed
dramatically since the early and mid 90's.

Resume
Writing Tips:
1.
Heading: Include
your full name and avoid nicknames, if possible.
List your home and cell phone numbers, but
leave your work phone number off. For your
email, make sure that it (a) sounds professional,
and (b) is not your current employer's email
address (e.g. name@merrill-lynch.com).
2.
Experience: Always
include 4 "data" items for each
employer: (1) Name of the company, (2) Location
where you work, not the company HQ, (3)
Dates of employment in years only rather
than months/years, and (4) Position title-
the rule of thumb on a title is that you
can change it if the one you have does not
represent what you do. If you are a Sales
Representative but were given a title such
as Customer Churn Specialist, use Sales
Rep. Otherwise, use the title given to you
by the company.
3.
Education: If
you have a degree, include it. If you don't
have a degree but took a great deal of courses,
include the number you have completed ("96
Hours Completed Towards BA Degree").
If you don't have a degree but took some
or a few courses, use a phrase without mentioning
the number of hours ("General Coursework
Completed, University of ..."). If
you have training courses, seminars, workshops,
etc., then list these, particularly if you
don't have a degree- you want to demonstrate
your professional development. You can also
include Professional Affiliations/Memberships
and Computer Skills in this section.
4.
Other: Remember:
(1) Spell check doesn't catch Manger (common
mistake for Manager); (2) Red isn't a recommended
paper color, (3) Don't put Team Player (everybody
uses this); (4) More than 6 bullets in a
row is too much; and (5) Don't go back beyond
1980 regarding employment inclusion on the
resume- even pre-1985/1990 may not be necessary
in some cases.
